I just found out that in the US, Sandy is a common female name and it’s short for Sandra.
What I find that interesting because Sandra is short for Alexandra, the female form of Alexander. In short, Sandy is a nickname of a nickname. ::smile:: Quite cute. The common short form of Alexander is Sandy, which is a very, very, very common name in Scotland. I don’t know anyone whose name is Alexander that doesn’t get shortened to Sandy. If not Sandy, then it’s Ally.
Sandy -> Sandra -> Alexandra
Sandy or Ally/Allie -> Alasdair (Alexander and other variants)
Perhaps it’s a surprise to some, but Alex is less common at where we were. Off my head: common male names in Scotland: James, Ross, Gavin, David, Finlay or Finn, Gordon, Jack, Matthew (always shortens to Mattie or Matty), Alasdair or Alexander (always shortens to Sandy or Ally/Allie), Daniel, Fraser, Declan, Stuart or Stewart, Joseph (always shortens to Joe), Robert, Luke, Douglas (sometimes shortens to Gaffe), and Euan.
