I spent over an hour trying to find a replacement for “I’m bothered.”
The character’s describing himself as “a lake hiding from ripples”. Like, he’s trying not to feel the effects of what was said, but he is feeling them anyway so he’s admitting to it somewhat unwillingly.
And I still haven’t found the damn replacement!
I’m disconcerted.
I’m annoyed.
I’m worried.
I’m feeling off-kilter.
I’m slightly upset.
I’m quite uncertain.
I’m a bit nervous.
I’m a little concerned.
I’m feeling somewhat disturbed.
None seems fit, though.
WHY?!!
Damn you, English! And you as well, you stupid brain! DAMN YOU!
“I’m troubled”?
That was on the list. It doesn’t quite fit.
Oh, sod it. I’m taking it. Thanks, Laura!
Or “I’m shaken by it”/”I feel a bit shaken”? Not so usual, but would fit with the image of the pond and the ripples (if one thinks of earthquakes).
