As soon as we realised the youngest mite has chicken pox a few days ago, the oldest mite and Anna went to stay at JR’s place as they haven’t had pox yet. So it’s been just me and the little mite in the house since then. The poor bastard was so miserable, with all the itchiness, feeling so poorly and like so. Then came a little surprise.
See this photo? (Excuse the crappy quality.)

Is that a shot from the early days of the poor mite’s pox-ridden skin? Nope. That’s mine, taken on my mobile phone yesterday for an aunt who insisted I had measles, not chickenpox, when I was a child.
As it turned out, she was right. How the hell I managed to avoid catching it all these years, in spite of all that travelling and meeting so many people, is something we will never know.
In my 30s and I have chickenpox. I’m even wearing gloves to stop myself from scratching some parts like mad. Christ. I’m not going to live this one down, am I?
W’s cut his work trip short and now on his way home today, but I’m going to avoid him for a bit when he gets in. I’m still seething that he fell about laughing as soon as I broke the news on phone. My aunt, Anna, JR, Sally and others thought it was hilarious as well. The hell. They wouldn’t laugh if they were in my itchy-as-fuck feet.
At least the youngest mite is much cheered that he isn’t alone in this pool of misery. Poor mite. I’m impressed he hasn’t whined at all. Unless some. *eyeing self*
I think the core of my whining/misery is the thought I wouldn’t see the oldest mite for another few days. It’s already been four or five days. Skype video is a godsend, but I miss hugging him.
I don’t think he’s that bothered, to be honest. It seems as if he’s having an adventure of his life at JR’s. Occasionally, JR forced him to sit at a computer to talk to me via Skype video, when the mite clearly wanted to carry on playing with one of JR’s latest electronic gadgets. Ouch, says my motherly ego. But you know, it’s fine as long as he’s fine. *bottom lip quivers*
In spite of my view (seeing JR as the anti-christ and all), I’m really appreciative of JR’s help. It really does help that Anna’s there, though. I’d be a nervous wreck otherwise, imagining JR teaching the mite all the bad pick-up lines and conditioning him to view Apple as the God of our universe.
Sorry to hear both you and the mite are ill. Even if you were exposed to chickenpox as a child, you can get it again as an adult. I hadn’t known that until recently when a friend got it for the second time. Isn’t the adult version called shingles in English? I think it’s something like that. At any rate, she was sick as her dog. Her kid had it as well, but his only complaint was itching.
It sounds as if Oldest Mite is having a fantastic time. He probably views this as a holiday.
Yeah, doctor thought I had shingles until he learnt I didn’t have pox as a child. Apparently if you already had pox as a child, it’s shingles. Which is apparently worse than pox. Ack. No wonder your friend was sick as dog.
Heh! Yeah, he does seem as if he’s in paradise. All right for some.
I’m now wondering what’s the difference between pox and shingles. He seems certain I have pox, but he did think I had shingles until he found out. This suggests there is no difference, is there? Hm. I must Google.
Ugh. I am so sorry to hear this. Our kids were vaccinated, so no pox for us. I had them as a child, and to this day have a round scar on my forehead from when I scraped one off while my mom ran to get the phone. *hugs*
Thanks. Ah, yeah. Our mites have been vaccinated against every known major childhood disease. Except pox. This, I didn’t know. Damn.
lol! I have a small circular scar on my forehead as well, but that was from when my brother threw a sharp-tip mechanical pencil or pen at me. I still can feel a tiny dent when I rub the little scar.
We should form a club: SSSF (“Society of the Slightly Scarred Foreheads).
Invite me! Invite me! I have a dent in my forehead. My mum says it’s from running into an iron balcony railing when I was 2 or 3. But my grandfather had one as well. So who knows. It is at a 45 degree angle, going through the right side from temple to middle. Quite odd.
I have the impression that the chicken pox vaccine is not widely used in Europe. My kids both had it, but more by accident than design. I was pregnant at the time my son was due his first shot of the MMR and both my OBGYN and his pediatrician advised me to give him the MMRV (Measles, Mumps, Rubella & Varicella) in case he should get it and give me shingles. Because he had it, I opted to get my daughter vaccinated as well.
Sign me up for the SSSF. I also have a small chicken pox scar on my forehead.
Huh. My kids had chicken pox, a many years ago now, when we were in France. I can’t remember if the vaccine wasn’t out then, or it just wasn’t common then. One child wasn’t much affected while the other was painfully itchy. Get better soon, Maili!
Oh Noes! That is terrible! You are not supposed to have chicken pox at this age. Even *I* had chicken pox as a mite and I didn’t have much else.
So very sorry.
Would it help to know that you won one of the Rose Garden giveaways over at DA? Yes indeed: http://bit.ly/ncu64d
Aw, thanks. I’m not supposed to? Tell that to that cheeky sod we call chickenpox. I actually found out earlier today that *none* of my siblings had chickenpox when they were children either, and the oldest three had it during their 20s. News to me. Heh. So odd.
Oh, nice! Thank you, but I feel so awful because I forgot to put in a note not to submit my comment as an entry. I think I was so excited that you gave the book an A. Would it be possible to replace me with someone else? Sorry, but thank you so much for the offer. It’s really nice that I won, though. Yay!
I wondered about that. We will draw another name and let them know of your largesse.
Feel better soon.
Sorry to hear that you got the pox
I had them as a child already. A neighbor actually had it and my mom sent us over there so we would be exposed to get it over with. Those were the days….did you Google the relationship between shingles and chicken pox? I did just to confirm but yes, they are both caused by varicella virus. Get well.
