Was busy over last few days making this for a friend’s birthday. It’s a papier-mâché portrait of her dog named Dotty.
I used old newspapers, paste and watercolour paints. For Dotty’s body, I used newspapers, matte sellotapes and paste, and pasted it onto the base, then laid a couple of newspaper sheets over the body and the base. Took me only a couple of hours. Half a day to dry it off. Then half a day on painting the whole thing.
The real Dotty doesn’t look anything like the fake Dotty, to be honest. He doesn’t smile, for instance. And he yaps. Yaps at everything and anything. Can you tell I’m not quite keen on the damn dog? I was seriously tempted to put ‘yap’ but she’d be hacked off if I did, so I went with ‘woof’ instead.
Anyroad, it’s all dried and ready to go, so will hand it over this Thursday. Hope she’ll like it. If not, ah well. At least I tried. =D When making this, I realised I don’t enjoy making papier-mâché any more. I don’t have the patience for it; not as much as I used to have. Probably because it’s a messy hobby. (laughing)
Is it designed to be propped up against a mantelpiece or can it be hung up? And if it’s the latter, would that be by being put in a frame or does it have a hole or some other way of hanging it directly on the wall? It just struck me, thinking about things that my art/craft-inclined friend has made for me, that it’s not difficult to appreciate the gifts; the difficult part is working out where to put them.
There’s a metal hook on the back. Should have taken a photo. If I were her, I’d dump it in a drawer. Or give it to Dotty to play with.
No, only joking. She wanted me to create something for her bathroom.
The bathroom is small but very bright with a lot of small windows. Walls, basin, loo and bath are white and the floor consists dark wooden planks. It makes one think one is in a boat or something like it, which is why I chose marine-related colours for this dodgy thing. =]
Sounds like it’ll suit her bathroom perfectly! Did you deliberately type “this dodgy thing” instead of “this doggy thing”?
Yes, dodgy.
I think it looks cool, I am sure she will love it.
Thank you, Edie.
