em_austen_PandP_5Typographically, it’s a mess. My excuse: it’s a rough draft. =D

The original image is below the cut.

  1. The drawing is beautiful. There’s a bit too much pink for my tastes but then I’m not really a pink person.

  2. Is the person in black Mr Darcy disguised as Harlequin? Or are those ice-skates peeping out from under the black drapery? Since he’s headless, I can’t work out which way he’s supposed to be facing. If he even is Mr Darcy. Colour-wise, I’m not sure how well that big stripe of black goes with the pale pink and white.

    I have no idea if this would look ridiculous, but if you cropped the picture, so that you just had the seated lady, you could arrange her feet on the step produced by the two Ps of the title, to leave her pretty much at the centre of the cover, but sort of echoed by the reclining ampersand on the other side.

    I did wonder if it had too much pink. Thanks for confirming.

    @Laura
    It’s actually a woman. (laughing) I have just uploaded the original image for your inspection.

    I could digitally remove the lady in black, but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to do this, though. Will give it a try, anyway.

    I’ll also try your suggestion to see how the ‘seating on the first P’ position might turn out. Thanks.

  4. I suppose one could imagine that the woman in black is Caroline Bingley, looking fashionable, while the woman in white is Elizabeth, turning away so that she can giggle about how strange Caroline’s outfit looks.

    I suspect that people tend to assume the characters on the cover are the protagonists, though, not one of the protagonists and a secondary character, so I can see why you chopped the head off.

    But maybe I’m wrong and other people don’t start thinking up explanations for the covers the way I do. Hmm. No, I think at least some people must do, or cover snark wouldn’t be so popular.

  5. @Laura
    That’s quite true. I chopped her head off because I felt she was the focus of the cover, which I didn’t want. I thought skewing the image would force people to look at the cover and try to figure out who’s who. Obviously, it didn’t work.

    Oh no, you weren’t wrong. I do pay attention to book covers, probably for same reasons as yours and other people’s. Anyroad, I just made a rough draft of your suggestion. I think it works somewhat well. The colour scheme still needs some work, though. Heh.
